A beautiful, like-new peasant skirt in feminine colors

A like-new (wrinkled, I know, but I haven't washed it yet!) Land's End cotton knit skirt with stretchy waistband that will be perfect for post-baby wearing

Both skirts are in my size (normal size that is *s*)

A can of unopened formula (I may not use it but if not, I have some friends who gladly will!)

A little basket for gift-giving

A brand-new Bible Story Book with stories focused on leading your child to Christ

Taste of Home Magazine (love these so much!)

A BRAND NEW IN THE BOX, NEVER BEEN OPENED electric/battery breast pump

A CD called Scripture Memory Songs for Kids

A like-new Gymboree dress (for the next friend of mine to have a little girl!)

A washable bib (love these!)

Cute Polo shirt for Jer

A fun toy for baby Justus, a bath toy for the kids (they don't have many bath toys), and some play tools and a turtle bowl for Jer (these are his Big Bro gifts "from Justus" he can open when he meets the baby. Ali is getting swimming goggles for her Big Sis gift). Jer loves turtles!

Not pictured: Birthday gift for a friend and like-new baby doll for the church nursery

I doubt there is a thrift store out there with great deals like the one in our town! Today was $2 for a brown bagful again and I was THRILLED with the $70 worth of stuff I found for $2!!! Yes, everything pictured above only cost TWO DOLLARS!

Could Today be the Day?

Just a note to say that I was awakened at 4 am with a strong contraction and they've been coming hard and long (average of 60 seconds or more) for an hour at exactly 8-minute intervals. Hope this is it! Maybe all those full moon theories about having babies really DO have some truth to them!

(I have a post scheduled to come up on my blog at 9am so if you see it, it doesn't mean I'm not at the hospital but home typing it! I just learned how to do the pre-scheduled posts thing and am trying it out!)

No Baby, More Fatigue

Well I guess King Jo also loses the baby guessing game since today was his day and he was SO SURE the little guy would make an appearance on the 14th!

I had NO contrax last night and he wasn't even terribly squirmy and I STILL couldn't sleep! I don't know if it's the naps I've been taking due to my exhaustion that keep me from sleep or if it's terror and fear of the impending labor, but for whatever reason, it seems that 2 a.m. is my new bedtime! I awoke from a horrible dream at 5:30 a.m. In my dream I was reading a birth story on the internet and the woman kept describing how she had felt this horrible, excruciating back pain. I kept reading it and reading it and couldn't escape this blog post until I finally woke up and realized that I was the woman and I was experiencing horrible low back pressure. Almost like a contraction that doesn't end. Not just your back being sore or out of place, but like a contraction without the cramping and releasing. I painfully rolled out of bed and proceeded to take a burning hot shower for a half an hour, which helped a bit and then King Jo got up and massaged me for a bit before work. Since this is the most pain I have had so far, I thought it might end up to be something. But after only about 6 contrax this morning, the pain went away after an hour and so here I sit, no more back pain and no action whatsoever! I feel like I'm caught in a bad dream that never ends and I just might be pregnant forever!

It's also nearly as bad to have to think about an impending labor (that is, if you've experienced natural childbirth at least once or twice before) rather than just going through it. Some women just instantly go into labor and 2-10 hours later they have a baby. No time to really even think about it or imagine how it will feel. They just do it. On the other hand, I have had hours and hours of pain-anticipation and emotional rollercoasters of being terrified, uncertain, excited, hopeful, disappointed, etc.
The full moon is coming this weekend and many folks believe that more babies are born during the full moon because of actual physical reasons (we're not talking new age-y theories of moon worship or anything.) Jer was born during the full moon time, so maybe the idea has merit.

I feel like Thia and I are twins now! She's a blogging friend stuck in the same exact place I am with her 3rd pregnancy and we are both over 39 weeks. We met through this blog and we are both so anxious for it to all be over!
The fatigue and pregnancy spacy-ness are definitely taking their toll on me as I started driving down MAIN STREET yesterday in the far left lane! Good thing we live in a small town and there was little to no traffic! Someone take away my keys!
The awesome thing is that I have AMAZING friends who are going above and beyond to help encourage me through this time. Thanks Shiloh for the bag of Hershey's Bliss chocolates you sent over yesterday! My goodness, I was craving quality chocolate and they hit the spot! (Did you go to Walgreens yesterday??? *s*) My other wonderful friend is bringing dinner by and a gal from church invited my kids over to play today for a few hours to give me a break. So, I really can't complain because life is good and it will all be over soon.

Doctor Appt. Update

Well, I was hoping not to have to make today's doctor appt. but that was not to be. I had to undergo the usual and that's NEVER fun in my opinion! The good news is that my cervix is very soft and the doctor thinks once REAL labor starts, I'll go quickly. The bad news is that my cervix hasn't rotated down yet, as it is supposed to before a baby can be born and you can dilate much further, and therefore it was very difficult for him to check (not to mention one of the most uncomfortable things I've endured) and it is not very effaced and only dilated about 2-3 cm.

The baby seems ready to go though and the frequent bouts of contractions over the past 5 nights are always a good sign. 5 nights of very little sleep hasn't been easy, but at least hubby was able to go to sleep last night at 9 p.m. and catch up some sleep. Lately Justus thinks it is fun to play soccer or basket ball in my tummy, get hiccups and squirm from about 11 or 12 until 2 a.m. and therefore even without contractions I can't sleep until about 2 a.m. This is the most active he's ever been. At least it's comforting to know he's alive down there.

I wasn't disappointed by the doctor's news because I really feel like time is flying and though it feels like an endless wait, I know it won't be long. The thing that has sent me into somewhat of a panic today is the thought of my in-laws coming so soon. I would have preferred some time to recover and spend with the baby without company but they have to come next week as they have a deadline for work. They need to leave here the 24th, I believe, and so they will likely be coming out next Tuesday or Wednesday, less than a week away! While it will be nice to have their help with the kids for 5 days and see them, as well as get our van (yeah!), once they leave, I'm pretty much on my own. My mom starts school right then too and King Jo is taking his vacation next week as well so he can spend time with his family. Even though I have wonderful in-laws who are not demanding and do help out a lot, I have always found it to be very tiring and stressful to have company. I have also found the week after childbirth to be one of the most emotionally stressful stages of life as you are dealing with pain and hormonal weepiness, and fatigue. Combine in-laws, post partum healing, and a hubby who will be busy entertaining and spending time with his family and it sounds like a recipe for disaster or a total Mrs. Jo melt-down!

So, today I am feeling the added pressure to "have the baby." As in, if I don't "have the baby" soon, the grandparents will miss even getting to see him! Yikes! It's not like I can do anything about that even though I wish I could! It's not that anyone is verbally pressuring me, but the circumstances crush around me and everyone is holding their breath, watching and waiting. Even my mom is getting several calls a day asking for baby news!

So, this is an update on our life today. Be praying for us to be peaceful and content no matter what happens in the coming days. It would have been wonderful to have had a June or July baby, but the Lord knows best and I need to trust that He is with us in this. Perhaps I will have a very quick and easy delivery and recover quickly and perhaps my in-laws will take the kids to the park and exploring for a week so I can sleep at home with the baby!

Lucky?

This post today, from Crystal at www.biblicalwomanhood.com/blog really hit home for me as a Stay-at-Home mom. You know from past "hot button" discussions here that I've heard comments about how staying home is boring and unfulfilling. Other ladies have said, "I could NEVER do it" as though it were too tough or challenging for them. And yes, like Crystal, I've heard lots of comments about how lucky I am to be a stay-at-home mom. But does luck really have anything to do with it?

Crystal writes:

I don't stay home with my girls because I'm lucky; I stay home because it's what God has called me to. God has entrusted me with two precious daughters to mother, nurture, train, and raise. There are plenty of other jobs out there--many with better hours and better pay. But no one else can take my place of being Kathrynne and Kaitlynn's mommy. And my husband and I are committed to make whatever sacrifices it takes to keep me home. It's not always easy but the sacrifices are very worth it.

It is truly a blessing to be able to stay home and one I don't ever want to take for granted, knowing not all women have that option. But conviction and planning would be better words to use than luck regarding WHY I'm a stay-at-home mom. One gal I used to work with was so jealous of the fact that I was quitting my job at the end of my first pregnancy. She would always make comments about the fact that she wished she could stay home too. I asked her if she had specifically looked for a husband who believed in stay-at-home moms and if she had married a man who desired that for his family. NO! Had she made wise financial choices and learned to be frugal wherever necessary in order to make her dream of being a stay-at-home mom a reality? I don't know, but most young women don't. Did she believe it was God's plan for her and trust that He would provide for them in order to make it on one income? I know I did, and He has! (The great thing is that now just a few years later my former co-worker is able to be a stay-at-home mom and I'm so happy for her!)

So, the next time someone throws out, "You are soooooo lucky to be able to stay home," perhaps instead of just nodding, I will stay instead, "Luck has nothing to do with it! We believe it's God's plan for our family and we watch Him provide and we live on a very tight budget in order to make it happen!"

Exhaustion...

This post is a little less-inspirational than yesterday's "I CAN" attitude. After our fourth night in a row of little sleep and hours of consistent contractions that went away, we are both feeling a bit hopeless, not to mention tired. I realize that our situation is not as desperate as the gal I know who was in pre-term labor for 7 weeks on and off and on all kinds of meds to stop labor, or the friends who have gone 2 weeks overdue (bless them!) but it is still the longest I have ever been pregnant now since I delivered my other kids a week or more early and this little guy only has 6 days until the due date. I could handle waiting a while if it weren't for the contractions and "false alarms" and lack of sleep. I feel like every day we just get more and more worn to a frazzle so that by the time real labor comes, if it EVER does, we will be wiped out and have no energy for it! King Jo, aka my Labor Massuese, will be asleep on the job and I won't have an ounce of strength to push! In my selfishness, I would have liked to have had the baby already so I could have more help with him. My mom goes back to teaching in a little over a week and my in-laws need to come out and be gone by the 25th or 26th so the longer I go the less private recovery time I will have and the less help with the kids overall. But if there is one thing I have learned about having kids, it's that the best made plans often fail and no matter how prepared you think you are, there are always unexpected circumstances that come up to show you how much you need God to get you through! *Past experiences include: #1. Catching the worst flu of my life which spurred a long labor on after a full day of non-stop puking, hubby only being able to stay home 3 days with me after Ali's birth, no sleep for about a week, and bad baby blues.
#2. Hubby staying home with me for a full week or more but having the worst flu of his life during that time and needing to be nursed to health (and Ali also, who caught it) while I was recovering from childbirth and experiencing the worst chest cold of my life and was supposed to be on bed rest for anemia (not to mention that I was still bleeding excessively). Some of our help ended up cancelling and King Jo's sis who came to visit a few weeks afterward caught the flu as well!

Believe it or not, I can actually still shave and paint my toenails, which is something I couldn't do with my other two pregnancies! I think having little kids to chase has forced me to be flexible physically no matter how big I am because Jer often wants to be held and I'm often bending down picking things up, etc.

If you think of us today, pray that God would bring our baby soon!!!

What I CAN Do

I can't make myself go into labor, but I CAN use this day to accomplish something productive while I play the endless waiting game.

I CAN pray for a friend who's discouraged right now.

I CAN send e-cards to all of my relatives who are remembering that my beloved Grandpa died one year ago tomorrow.

I CAN help Ali paint a pretty picture for my parents to celebrate tomorrow their 29th anniversary.

I CAN love my kids and care for their endless needs and be the mommy they need me to be today.

I CAN show my husband appreciation and love.

I CAN work on chores to get the house even more ready and more tidy than it was yesterday!

I CAN always do laundry!!! (Never ending......)

I CAN take a little extra time to read to my kids and spend time one-on-one playing with them.

I CAN take time to chat with my neighbor.

I CAN go to Bible Study and be encouraged by the fellowship of other godly women.

I CAN see if my box of peaches is ready for jam-making.

I CAN take advantage of the time to sleep/nap while I still have the chance.

I CAN take care of those little last minute things like shaving my legs, painting my toenails, scrubbing the toliet, making up an instruction sheet for Alathia and Jeremiah's care while I'm in the hospital, etc.

I CAN trust that God will bring our son in the perfect timing!

Frustration

Sorry that my blog has been become "Pregnancy Update-Ville" lately, but that is the frustration of my life right now. Both Friday and Saturday night yielded very real-feeling labor contractions for several hours, with Saturday night's being so intense and frequent that I thought I would surely have a very fast delivery or at least be holding him by early Sunday morning. Contractions with Jer's labor never got closer than 6 or 7 minutes even when I was at a 9! These were coming between 1 and 5 for a while! We scurried around doing last minute prep and were just preparing to call my mom and the hospital when they stopped. It was so disappointing. Then, hoping each night we'd see a little more action we were sure Sunday night would be the night and........NOTHING!
While it may seem silly to "get our hopes up" it's just hard to wait, especially since my hubby is absolutely ecstatic about this and unbelievably annoying. I want this over with so he will stop asking again and again and again, over 50 times a day, if I have even the slightest contraction. I'm scared he's going to drop a log on himself at work later today just because he didn't go to bed early like he said he would and he's lain awake most of the night, noticing how I can't sleep either, in spite of no contractions, and watching me like a time bomb.
I realize this will all be over soon and I should live every moment as though it were my last and enjoy these last days of just having two little ones and be thankful, knowing God is sovereign and will bring Justus on the day He has ordained. It's just hard to live that out when your parents are on alert, your friends and family are dying to hear news, your children are super excited about the baby and you have already been exhausted from 2 practice labors that yielded no results except fatigue and restlessness!
Well, I've tried the really spicy food and the long walks, anyone have any tips for really getting labor going?

Update

Well, we were hopeful that today would be the day, but it doesn't look like it anymore! I actually had contractions on and off from about 7 or 8 p.m. until about 1 a.m. I started timing them around 10 or 10:30 because up until then they were very irregular and not painful. Once they did become more painful they only came every 15 minutes. When we finally went to bed, way too late of course, they subsided and stopped.

So, today I am beyond tired! I took a long morning nap as King Jo is thankfully not working a half-Saturday today as he usually does, but I still feel like an absolute zombie and like I can hardly move I'm so tired. This is the first Sat. in a long time I could have gone yard sale-ing without the kids and I didn't even have the gumption for that! I'd better catch up on some rest before I go into an exhausting labor! I think I'll go take another nap and then see if I have enough energy to take Ali to a friend's swim party/birthday party later this afternoon.

Appt. Update

No baby yet! I just chose a nap over posting at the usual time!

I wish he had been born today, Kristin's guess, since it would have been pretty cool to have an 08/08/08 baby! I guess there is still time, but considering I went from having contrax a couple of weeks ago to over a week now of NO contrax, it's not too likely!

The neat thing is that I had an appt. today and got to see an OB nurse, who was much more thorough and sweet than the doctors I have had, and she ordered an ultrasound after finding me at only a 1 (and I really suspect I was only given that because she rammed her way into my cervix!) and after me saying that I feel no pelvic pressure and am wondering what position he is in.

Though it's harder to see things on ultrasound when the baby is this big, it was so awesome to hear the technician say, "the head is down deep in the pelvis!" Hooray! Another testimony to God's grace and an answered prayer! I definitely don't feel it down there! At the last minute she was able to confirm for me that he is DEFINITELY a boy! Hurray, since that's what I have my heart set on now; not to mention his clothes ready and his scrapbook started! My mom came along with me to help with the kids (since Jer needed a swollen ear looked at too) and so we all got to see the ultrasound together! The kids seemed less impressed this time around and I guess I don't blame them since it's kinda hard to tell what body parts are what in there!

I'm hoping for a baby this weekend, even if my doc is on vacation through Tuesday! Tuesday is my folk's anniversary, so maybe Justus will hold off until then just to spite my Dad, who is hoping to take my mom camping overnight in Jackson that night if there is no sign of a baby coming yet!

I'll keep ya'll posted and if I do have a lengthy labor, like usual, then I will take time to notify the blog-world that I'm in labor! If only we could all have a labor like Kristin!

I want to have this baby, if only.......
.....to stop Ali from rubbing my belly and talking to it non-stop
.....to stop being greeted by my hubby several times a day with, "Any contractions at all?"
.....so my friends can stop calling and asking permission to go to the lake, or camping or something since they know I need them to watch the kids when I go into labor
.....so we can hold him and see him!

Deleted Post!

I got a tip from one of my readers who said she had heard from my sis-in-law that my mom-in-law really does read my blog weekly (that's news to me!) so I thought I'd delete that post I wrote about her gift, just in case! I know she is on a boating vacation today and will be busy with packing for the trip out here in the coming week or two but it's better to the pull the post and put it back later than to ruin the suprise! Thanks for the tip Julie!

Happy Faces

I couldn't resist posting these cute recent pics of my little ones! They definitely look alike, especially when Jer is copying sister's expressions! (By the way, the top two were taken when they were fresh out of the bath and Ali convinced brother to hold a baby too and THEY were the ones that begged me to take a picture because THEY thought they were so cute sitting there together each holding a doll!)

The Gentle Mothers Support Club

How has everyone been doing with being a gentle mother? I'd be interested to learn what situations or times of day are hardest for you when it comes to being gentle. Please share in the comments section.

It's always a challenge and something I need to always be working on but thankfully this last week or two has been MUCH better. I don't know if there was a hormonal shift as I get ready for labor or if I've been getting more sleep, but I've felt a lot less tense with the kids and have noticed Ali has had a couple of really good weeks. Seeking to invest in her and challenge her with more projects and activities helps her to behave better overall.

One of the biggest things that has helped me with gentleness lately is being on the receiving end of some big blessings this week. My hubby decided to take us out for Sunday lunch, which is a rare treat, and that meant the lunch I had ready for after church became Sunday dinner so I didn't have to cook all day! On Monday, a woman from my Bible Study, who is as sweet as can be, offered unexpectedly to bring supper by for us and she brought a delicious stew, biscuits, cookies, watermelon, AND a frozen lasagna and loaf of frozen garlic bread for another quick meal I can use in the future! What a huge blessing!

To top it all off, my mom offered to take the kids for 3 hours this morning and I was able to get a lot of errands and grocery shopping stuff done and it was so easy without the kids! I haven't had a morning off like that in months!

All of these blessings combined made me feel a lot less tired and a lot less overwhelmed this week! It just goes to show you how fatigue, busyness, and working with no breaks can frustrate us and make us more prone to give up control of our emotions when the kids get difficult.

Besides sharing WHEN it is most difficult for you to be gentle, do you have any stories of instances where you have been blessed by someone in your life which contributed to your being able to be a gentler mother?

Time on the Computer?

Meredith had a great question for my blog readers. Please share any tips you may have for her!

"How do you limit your time on the computer so that you tend appropriately to your family? I need limiting ideas."
My personal tips: I try to only be online during the kid's sleeping times. That means that I have 30 minutes to an hour in the morning while Jer naps during which Ali colors or watches a children's video. I also shower and get ready during that time. Since my kids are still both taking naps, I have my "mommy break" of the day for a couple of hours while they nap from 1-3pm. I'm not a big napper, so instead of a nap, I relax with a couple of hours on the computer (and often a piece of dark chocolate or other snack *s*). Some ladies may feel guilty doing this because they think of all of the housework that needs to be done, but I know that this little break rejuvenates me and is worth it considering the many hours I put in each day as a mom. Since we live in a tiny apartment, I can't do much cleaning or cooking during this time anyway as it would keep the kids awake. I do walk down and switch laundry loads during this time and catch up on letters or bills if needed. Usually, my hubby gets the computer after the kids are in bed, but he's been going to bed earlier so I can sometimes get on after he's in bed or on the night he is gone to help with the Youth Group. On weekends I get online during the day if King Jo is playing with the kids or running errands with them or they are napping.
While I'm not 100% perfect at following my own computer boundaries, (there are days when I may need to look up a recipe when the kids are awake or may need to send an urgent e-mail I forgot about), I really try to give the kids the time they need and not be glued to the computer all the time. I don't want them to think all their Mom cared about was the computer and they were left in the dust and weren't worthy of my attention. They need constant supervision, eye contact, and training so it's nearly impossible to type or read on the computer anyway when they are awake and active. It's so much more frustrating for me personally to try to be online when they are awake so that it's not even worth it, which is another reason I try to stay off when they are awake.
When Jer gives up that morning nap (he's close to it) and there is another baby in the mix, I'm sure I will have less time on the computer. Indeed, on busy days where we have morning outings or errands, or on days when I need a nap to survive I hardly spend any time on the computer, unless I get an opportunity later in the evening. There may be stages of my life where early mornings before anyone is awake is the best time to get on or late at night when everyone is in bed. Right now nap time is the preferred time for my schedule.
Some tips I would suggest for limiting yourself:
Set a timer. Set a realistic goal for yourself and jump up when the timer rings.
Evaluate where you are wasting time or having trouble with limiting. Choose some favorite sites and the blogs that encourage you the most and forego the extras. There are always more sites out there than we can possibly visit each day, even if they are interesting and inspirational.
Spend some days doing one thing, and other days doing other things. I read a few of my favorite blogs daily in about 10 minutes time, but I catch up with the bulk of my friends' and family's blogs about once or twice a week. I tend to write a few posts all at once in a rush of inspiration and then have a day where I don't post on my blog at all, but spend my computer time reading blogs or printing coupons or catching up on e-mails. I have found myself at times with lots of time because my favorite bloggers are all on vacation so it is during these times that I check out new sites, look for new recipes, or catch up on the many links to Frugal Friday posts.
Go to the computer ready. Write your blog posts in your head throughout the day and have your camera uploading pictures to your computer while you are vacuuming or washing dishes so they are ready and waiting. I downsize and sort photos while I'm on the phone sometimes so they are ready for a snappy upload and I often write blog posts in the shower, in my head. If you know what you want to say and you have a plan for what needs to be accomplished on the computer during your allotted time you will make the most of it and get a lot done, leaving you plenty of time for your family too.
While certain friends of mine have no desire to blog or read blogs, for me, blogging DEFINITELY builds character and helps me grow as a writer and sort out my thoughts and feelings. I love the accountability of it too, as I focus on various goals (Making my Home a Haven, Project Minivan, Project Preparation, Investing in Alathia, etc.) and have to "report" back to the blog how I'm doing. Since there aren't a lot of young Christian mothers in my community, it is such a blessing to me to have the inspiration of connecting with like-minded Mamas in the blogging world and gaining wisdom from their ideas and experiences too! I am so glad that I can stay in touch with old friends and family via blogging also! Because I have gained so much through blogging/reading blogs (just ask my hubby how much more inspired and motivated I am as a wife/homemaker and how much I've learned to save through couponing!), I desire to continue to keep it in my schedule so long as it doesn't take over my life and take away from my time with family or my duties as a wife and mom. It's something we all have to constantly be evaluating and watching since it's so easy for hours on the computer to slip by and it's so hard to say no to ourselves.

100 Things About Me....

Inspired by Julie's post of 100 things, which was very witty and creative, I decided to copy her because it's been a while since I've done something like this and thought you might like to know some odd facts about the author of The King's Missus.

1. When I was in first grade, I said I wanted to be a baker when I grew up!

2. My dream car would be a jade-green Land Rover.

3. In college I survived on spaghetti; just ask my roomies!

4. I used to be afraid of marriage and I vehemently declared I would wait for marriage until 40.

5. I like to be prepared; however I've discovered in mothering that you can NEVER be 100% prepared.

6. I used to have a horse club in 5th grade where girls would come over and ride my horse Rebel, and we called ourselves Rebel's Girls!

7. I was raised going on very rugged, extreme camping trips on horseback, miles into the wilderness as our idea of a "family vacation."

8. My parents were strictest with me (the oldest) and loosened up considerably with each subsequent kid (3 total).

9. I used to be a HUGE practical jokester and have been known to: put fake bugs in food at my Grandma's house, hide a rubber snake under my Grandma's pillow, make cookies for my family with laxatives in them, put a dead mouse in a pretty package and give it to a guy friend (in High School) who was deathly terrified of mice, prank the boys' dorm with fellow pranksters in college, etc. etc.

10. I LOVE reading embarrassing stories! Maybe someday soon we'll do a feature on them on my blog!

11. I'm deathly terrified of mice too!

12. I don't understand why anyone would WANT to have rodents for pets.

13. I like animals but I'm not big into pets and don't care if our family never has any.

14. I read constantly and have always been a bookworm.

15. I used to love Nancy Drew books back in elementary school.

16. I rub my lips together a lot when I'm nervous.

Making My Home a Haven Monday

Since much of my de-cluttering and organizing is done and I'm playing the waaaaaiiiiiiiitttttttiiiiiiinnnnnggggg game, I've been dusting off those cooking ambitions that I seem to leave behind in pregnancy and have been trying some new recipes and delving into some new Taste of Home magazines I recently purchased at a yard sale for 10 cents. I have been so irritated at myself and my fatigue and my departure from my meal plans in previous weeks so it feels great to be back on track with serving my family good, wholesome meals. I seem to have more energy lately too, which helps.

I already posted on the whole wheat cinnamon rolls. I've also tried Laura's whole wheat applesauce bread (yum!) and her whole wheat pizza pockets. The pizza pockets are delicious! Even my hubby, who normally doesn't like whole-wheat pizza crust, loves them and they are delicious reheated as leftovers in the microwave! The recipe makes enough for about 13 hot pockets and 2 per adult are plenty filling for supper with a salad. I haven't tried freezing them yet but Laura freezes them for quick meals/lunches and they are a much healthier, and tastier, than the expensive store-bought Hot Pockets.
I'm thrilled to have found some new recipes that are healthier, filling, and that both my hubby and I, and the hard-to-please kiddoes, love!

Waterworks Fun Day!

Every summer the local Children's Museum sets up a fun day called Waterworks where they have waterslides, swim pools, sand, sea shells, water toys, and a big pool of bubble solution for doing bubbles in all shapes and sizes. I love taking the kids every year (and it only costs $3 for all of us). My kids were there for 3 hours and still weren't quite ready to go home yet! I was glad that it was a little cloudy this year since it has been unbearably hot in previous years. They gave out free watermelon, granola bars, and ice water too!

Appointment News!

Have you ever been so grateful for something that you couldn't help but cry? Thanks be to God for answering all of your prayers and causing our baby to turn! I was shocked when the doctor said he was pretty sure the head was down since I have been checking daily for a week and a half and his head has always been right up under my rib and pretty easily detected. Yesterday, I had a chiro adjustment, went swimming, and got a really nice massage from my hubby, all of which made me feel wonderful, loose, and relaxed. Last night we were trying to pinpoint the baby's position but we couldn't tell. I'm pretty sure if he turned, it was last evening or during the night. So.....unless he turns back, the odds of a vaginal delivery are very good! And no uncomfy manual-turning procedure this weekend!

He is somewhat in a transverse position causing me to measure 32cm instead of 38cm, but the doctor acted like he would move down with contractions so I'm hopeful that he will stay in position. Because I feel a lot less uncomfy this time around and look smaller, we have wondered if this baby is on the small-side. Sure enough the doctor said, "Well, you won't be having the biggest baby on the planet, but the fact that he's small means he should be easy to deliver!" Yeah hurray! This said before my doctor headed up to the hospital to help with a 10# baby's delivery today (poor gal!)

The bad news is that both doctors in town who do baby deliveries are going away next week, Sunday through Saturday. In the past I've always delivered at 39 weeks on the dot so this is mildly discomforting since next week is when I'm most likely to deliver. There will be a sub doctor covering for them but I just met this doctor and started getting to know him! The joys of delivering a baby in Hickville, WY I guess! I've racked my brain to try to figure out if my due date is on target or not based on the baby's small size and am trying to think about when my in-laws should come to visit since they have a limited time window. The more I consider it, the more I am QUITE certain that the due date is pretty close. The ultrasound at 21 weeks confirmed my due date and I distinctly recall thinking my cycle was 4 days late right around that whole infected wisdom tooth thing on Dec. 15th. Perhaps with his small size, this little guy will decide to go overdue unlike my other two kids. But whatever happens, I'm rejoicing that God has answered prayer and most importantly, given me peace that no matter what happens, we'll get through it in His strength.

Thank you all for your prayers, your tips, and sharing your own experiences with having babies and mothering!!! It has meant so much to me and I am so grateful for my blogging buddies!

Frugal Friday--Tips for Clothing Toddlers

Frugal Buy Gone Bad! These matching dresses sure were cute on the clearance rack for $3 each back in March when I thought for sure I was having another girl! Frugal tip: Don't buy for your kids, even on a super clearance, when you don't truly know the gender of your child-to-come!!! I ended up giving them to a friend with two little girls in exchange for borrowing her steam vaccuum cleaner.

Something I'm learning about toddlers/preschoolers and clothing is that you can't always plan ahead and "stock up" for them in advance when it comes to clothing. My frugal tip of the day is... that you should endeavor to buy very little for your toddler in the way of clothes even if it is at yard sale prices unless those clothes can be used within the next few months and you know that they really need that specific item. This may apply more to girls than boys in general.
If you received the clothes free, as we have gotten most of ours, you can pick and choose what to store and see what happens. But do realize that just as they got passed on to you because of quick growth spurts or adamant preferences, you will be passing many of them on in a while too. So don't waste your time/space storing too many. For example, Ali went through a stage of only wearing dresses. This was fine by me but we had dozens of cute jeans and khaki/courderoy pants that weren't even used that I had stored in anticipation of her wearing. Thinking I had her figured out, I began collecting pretty dresses for her in the next size up and giving away most of the jeans we got from hand-me-downs in the bigger size. Then she switched to only wanting to wear skirts and so the same two or three favorites got worn threadbare while dozens of beautiful, like-new outfits sat untouched in her closet. So, I scooped up little skirts where I found them at yard sales and the hand-me-down bags and then summer came along and with it a new preference for shorts, not skirts! And though we have tons and tons of shorts saved that still fit from last summer, she wears the handful of ugliest ones she has and routinely turns down the cutest pairs. The summer dresses I had anticipated her wearing sit untouched in her closet, already outgrown in just a few months' time!
Since we have lots of other battles to fight with Ali, fighting over clothing is not a huge priority on my agenda. I'd rather be flexible and give her some independence than force what she wears each day. So today she went to the library in pink crocs, a yellow t-shirt, and a blue skort. Oh well! Here are some tips that may help you plan wisely in the kid clothes department:
*Choose Practical Clothes! After you have had your first you will know what kind of outfits you like and don't like. I discovered I love baby bunting pajamas, button-up-the-middle onesies and zip-up style pajamas for newborns that allow easy access for nighttime diaper changes. Keep these little things in mind as you plan for your next child and pass on those outfits, adorable though they may be, that you know won't be practical. If you haven't had a baby, ask a seasoned mom to look over your baby clothes with you and give advice.
*Choose simple clothes! Don't get me wrong, I have a darling suit for Jer and Ali has had some wonderful Easter dresses but they are most comfy in simple clothes that don't hinder their movement.
*Stocking up on t-shirts for boys is usually safe but be careful about pants/shorts as they may not fit right in a year. Right now Jeremiah is very happy with shirts that have things he is interested in on them. He may never care what I pick when it comes to shorts or pants (after all, he's a boy!) but he is thrilled to wear a truck or an elephant or a bike shirt. I know that stocking up on these types of things for next year is pretty safe since he'll likely still be into those things. Even if boys don't have as many choices and aren't as picky, keep in mind that those cute pants you bought might end up being too tight or too loose around the waist or might look like capris when they are meant to be long shorts (Jer has a pair like this and he's been teased about it!)
*Keep it frugal by hitting the thrift shop sales periodically. Our thrift shop does $2 a bag days at least 4 or 6 times a year and this is a prime time to fill up a huge bag of clothes for your kid for that season. Even if it's not a bag sale day and I need something, like pajama pants for Jer, I can almost always find really nice clothing there for around 10 cents to a quarter per item. I've said it before on my blog, but our thrift store often carries kid's clothes with the tags still on them!
*Stock up on the essentials at yard sales/clearances/thrift stores that will definitely be used in the coming year or two:
Socks
Undies (if new)
Swimsuits in good condition in the next size up
Footie Pajamas in bigger sizes
*Don't buy used shoes for your kids unless your child tries them on right there and they will be used right away. I have gotten so many great buys on shoes only to find out that though they were the right size, they weren't wide enough, or they skipped that size altogether in a growth spurt, or the velcro on the tennis shoes doesn't stick well when they run, etc. Sometimes you really do find great buys on used shoes, but be very cautious about buying them. Accept hand-me-down shoes and give them a try but also look for good clearances at discount stores or shoe stores as it's often more bang for your buck to buy your child new shoes that fit them well and have a little room to grow in. My personal preference is getting my kids inexpensive Croc-type shoes for the summer since they are washable and comfy and easy for them to put on.
*One In/One Out! If you see something cute that you want to get for your child, make yourself follow the "one thing in, one thing out" rule. I found a really cute pink flowery skort today at the thrift shop and remembered that one of the cotton knit skirts Ali always wears is not only losing the painted flowers on it, but is not very modest on my active girl. So, I determined to throw out the old skirt and replace it with the new comfy skirt that has built in shorts under it!
*Shop with your child's preferences/temperament in mind. Today I saw an adorable, brightly-colored, like-new shirt that would have looked lovely on Ali for the fall. However, I remembered the battles we had last fall/winter over her getting her sleeves wet when washing hands and having a fit about it and changing clothes 10 times a day. I also know that she is always hot, even in the dead of winter, and prefers t-shirts. Since t-shirts on her make my life easier and can easily be layered with a fleece sweatshirt, I decided not to buy the cute long-sleeved shirt even if it was a steal.
*Know what you have. Periodically paw through your kids' clothing boxes and figure out what you need and what you don't need. Some women make lists in a little notebook to remind themselves so they don't buy things they already have. We use apple boxes and HUGE ziploc storage bags for storing next-size-up clothes in the kid's closet and purple and blue rubbermaid tubs for storing the outgrown clothing in the storage shed. I turned down an adorable baby tuxedo this week at a yard sale because I knew that we already had one in storage from when Jer was a baby.
*Don't stock up for more than a year in advance. One reason I choose not to stock up beyond a year in advance is so that I can keep on top of the organization of the many kid's clothes we have. Besides, if I shop for the next 3 years, I will rob myself of the joy of yard-sale-ing next summer! Or, I will buy more, even if I already have things, and end up with way more than I need.
*Don't store too many outgrown-clothes! I choose to give about half or more of Ali's clothing away when she outgrows it just because it is more than we need even if we have another little girl and it might as well be used in the here and now. There are no guarantees we will need pink clothes again and so I'd rather not waste precious storage space holding on to too much. No doubt if we were blessed with another daughter in the future, friends would gladly pass on little girl things, or I'd have a ball bargain-shopping for her! I do save my very favorite outfits or the ones with special memories attached because it would be fun to give a few outfits to the kids when they have their own babies to wear them! I save most of Jer's clothes since I know another boy is following close behind, but I'm sure that many of those things will get passed on as Justus outgrows them (since there are no guarantees we'll see blue again either!)
*Clothing quality/color. Because we have been given so much for free and have such great bargains in our town, I can afford to make choices of clothing based on my kid's coloring and the quality of the clothing. While I definitely don't think name-brand clothes are a must, and I don't want my kids to be spoiled about clothing or vain in their appearance, I do pass on the clothes that are stained, dirty, faded, or stretched out, even if it's only slightly. I look for new or like-new clothing and I've found that brands like OshKosh are wonderful because they still look new wash after wash. We've been given so many clothes with the tags still on them that there is no reason for me to purchase worn or heartily-used clothes at yard sales, even if they are only pennies. I endeavor for my kids to look somewhat nice since we are a walking testimony of a Christian family in our little town. Since my darker-skinned kids look nicest in bright and bold colors, I often pass the cute pastel hand-me-downs down to friends with little blondies! When something becomes too threadbare or stained with paint/ink I throw it in the rag bag or thrift-store it!
And two tips for getting kids to wear outfits that are nice instead of over-used/mismatched concoctions:
1. Hide their usual picks in the upper closet for a week or two so they can't find them when getting dressed. King Jo wanted to hide all of Ali's ballerina outfits for a while he got so sick of them!
2. Pick out two or three nice outfits and ask your child to choose one of the three for the day.

Waiting....

Some evenings when I lay myself down to sleep I feel like I'm in a freaky "Twilight Zone" where I can hardly take another minute of the discomfort/worry/dread/anticipation of waiting for labor and my baby and all that it will entail to get him here. Other moments I'm amazed that I still feel so good, seem so small, and that time is flying faster than it ever did in my previous two pregnancies. As time continues to roll on and my Dr. appt. approaches tomorrow, I know that even though some of these moments feel like forever and some feel like the blink of an eye, we don't have long to go until we meet our precious little guy. If I can just keep from thinking too much about it and continue praying and staying busy with the daily care of my family, before you know it it will all be over, and the odds are good that I will have lived through it, whether it was a long and torturous natural labor or a scary, first-time C-section. I appreciate all of your encouraging comments and e-mails in recent days. You would all be very proud of me as I came across a website last night with graphic breech birth photos and I didn't look at a single one! Though I've looked at lots of sites with info on breech babies, I have not been obsessing about turning him, just praying, and doing what I can to encourage him. I'm at peace if my doctor recommends a version turning session tomorrow or sometime early next week.

Please keep praying for us and I'll report back to my blog tomorrow after my Dr. appt!

P.S. Thanks to Nicole for recommending a chiro! I went today and even if the adjustment doesn't cause him to turn, it sure felt good to get aligned as my hips, tailbone, and lower back and neck were starting to have a lot of discomfort from the weight and strain of a baby!

Whole Wheat Cinnamon Rolls

I came across a blog yesterday that is one of my new favorites! Laura, a mom of 4 active young boys, has a ton of inspiring recipes and homeschooling tips to check out on http://www.heavenlyhomemakers.com/. I tried her Whole Wheat Cinnamon Rolls, and they are delicious and so much better for you than the regular kind. I also can't wait to try her applesauce bread, her soft pretzels, and her pizza pockets among other things.

The cinnamon rolls fulfilled several needs. A crazy need I've been feeling recently to cook up a storm (is this hormonal?), a craving to eat a homebaked treat, a desire to bless others (they made so many that my folks' Bible Study got a plateful, as well as a friend whose son had surgery today and my hippie neighbor who loves home-baked whole wheat goodies), and I froze some too! And to top it all off, they added something special to my Operation-Invest-In-Alathia goals since she got up really, really early this morning and we shared a nice breakfast together of cinnamon rolls, juice, and fruit and spent time cuddling, chatting, and reading books before her brother woke up! She quickly devoured two and loved them! So, if you're a mom who is looking for healthier snack ideas for your kids, check out Laura's site! Did I also mention that these rolls were very, very simple to make?

Leather Shoes

Most of these pairs were ordered by friends in MN (or friends of friends).

I haven't made leather shoes in a few months, but I have been meaning to post pics of the latest pairs I made and kept forgetting. Heather's post today reminded me to post my pics. Heather is the reason I got started on sewing leather shoes in the first place! Maybe in a few months I will be whipping out a pair for little Justus! I miss sewing but it's not something I have tons of energy for right now.

Little Boys

Playing with twucks all day long!
" Pshoo! Pshoo!" Shooting at Mama with the water pistol, only the pistol is actually pointing right at him!
He loves his dog puppet, which he puts on his arm and then says, "Wuff! Wuff!" Then he tries to make the puppet eat me or eat big sis!

Having both a boy and a girl is very interesting! They are very different just due to personalities but some things are very gender-specific too. Whereas Ali drug her little doll everywhere with her at 21 months and liked to play babies, Jeremiah drags a truck (twuck) or a ball (socca ball or ball-ee) around EVERYWHERE we go and the first thing he says when I come get him up in the morning or from nap is "TWUCK!" as he shows me his trucks for the hundredth time! His eyes lit up with ecstasy when I pulled out a new shirt from the thrift store that has construction machines on it! He said, "Ohhhhhhhh!"

In spite of his fascination with sticks, trucks, and balls (and recently squirt guns thanks to a friend's little boy) he is still my tender-hearted little cuddle bug. When I scold him (which isn't too often) he gets a very hurt, worried look and runs over to hug me. I have no idea where he learned this but he started saying "I wuv you! I wuv you!" when I'm upset with him or while he's sobbing after a light spanking. Sometimes he says, "Kisses?" and other times if I'm not scolding him but just ignoring him because I'm busy he looks at me with big eyes and says, "Mommy?" I know exactly what that look means and I turn to him and say, "I love you Bear-Bear!" and he cheerily replies, "Okay!!!" He just needs some reassurance that I'm happy with him. Though I love my kids equally their personalities bring a different dynamic into the picture. Ali seems to know how to push all my buttons effortlessly, perhaps because we are so much alike in many ways, and Jer seems to know how to diffuse my bad moods instantly, like his daddy does, and make me smile or laugh!

Operation Invest-in-Alathia

Figuring out how to roll cookie dough into small balls!

Yummy! We're so proud of ourselves!

You may be wondering how Operation Invest-in-Alathia is going. It has been really difficult to do anything with her in the last week alone due to the fact that each evening we were attending 5-Day Clubs and it seemed like our days were so full there was never a moment when she was either a.) awake b.) alone and not running around outside with brother or the neighbors or c.) cooperative, not to mention that King Jo was busy this weekend with different things (caving, helping Jorge replace a major car part, caving again) so I didn't have an opportunity to take Ali on a date. I'm hopeful that we will get to do something fun together this week. We did make cookies, which she loved, and Frida enjoyed helping too. Frida and Ali were outside playing and I was supervising them and noticed Frida being naughty so I told Ali to come in and do cookies with me. Frida pleaded to be allowed to help and I wavered for a moment. On the one hand, I know it is one of her VERY FAVORITE things to do and yet I was already tired of dealing with her and didn't want her to spend too much time with Ali. But, you will all be proud of me (!) I put aside my irritability and kindly told her she could help make cookies if she was a good girl in our home instead of sternly ordering her to go home. The girls both had a blast and did wonderfully and I sent her home with a plate of cookies when they were done and told her playtime with Ali was over. *Side note* Later that day we found out Frida had lied to us about something and we were explaining to Ali that lying is wrong and she piped up with, "Frida doesn't get spankings when she lies because her mom doesn't have a spanking spoon!"

Operation Invest-in-Alathia is still very much at the forefront of my mind and though I daily seem to fail in my responses towards her and daily find myself exasperated and at a loss as to how to parent her gently, I continually "get back on the saddle" and beg the Lord for patience and wisdom in this! By the way, why is it that one's spirited kid is PERFECT for everyone else? We went to the dentist for their very first check-up ever today and I was nervous considering how some of our doctor visits have gone. But she laid in the chair perfectly, talked to the dentist like he was an old friend, and kept her mouth wide open the whole time, even when he was busy reaching for other tools and stuff! I was amazed! Jer did the typical one-year old routine of being scared and crying but his check-up was only a minute or two.

Fun With Beans

Thanks to Mara's post called "Cool Beans" I was inspired to let my kids play with beans tonight while I made supper. It was slightly difficult for them to share and Jer had some trouble dropping some beans on the floor, but overall it was a very fun activity for them and one I plan to whip out often in the future for a sanity saver during meal prep! Thanks for the great idea Mara!

The book Mommy, Teach Me mentions letting kids play with a tub of rice so that's another possibility for some variety. Also, a veteran homeschooling mom told me a few weeks ago that one of the best ways to keep little kids busy while older kids are doing lessons with Mom is to let them drive trucks and cars around in a tub of cornmeal in the kitchen. I like that idea as it would be a bit easier to clean up than sand!

Making My Home a Haven Monday

I didn't do a before pic but my lids used to just be randomly thrown in with the pots. Thanks to a brand new pot lid rack at a yard sale for 10 cents my pot lids look very nice now! On the right I store wire racks and placemats.
My silverware drawer was starting to look awful with odds and ends strewn about. I took a couple of small boxes out of my gift wrap stash and put sippy valves in one and clothespins (for closing up chip and snack bags) in the other. I weeded out a lot of rarely-used utensils and put them in a less-accessible cupboard, trying to keep this daily-used drawer more simple.

As you know, I've been madly cleaning, organizing, and preparing for the new baby. It feels really good to tackle all these "unfinished projects" and neglected areas of the house. I got most of the cabinets in my kitchen organized (a couple more to go today) and have been taking care of little piles of papers on my desk and dresser and other little odds and ends that get put off continually. I also need to clean out my Bible case as it is getting pretty cluttered with bulletins and sermon notes. Other areas that need worked on our the desk cubbies and under the couch (where I know stray toys are hiding!)

What are you working on in your home today?

The Crazy Things a Woman Will Try....

Don't worry; my hubby took this photo at a weird angle so it looks like I'm more upside-down than I really am! This position definitely irritates the baby and makes him really active, which is the intended goal!

Alathia thought it would be cool to try it too. She makes it look so easy!

It is truly, truly uncomfy to lie in this position when all your joints are sore anyway and your back and tailbone hurt and you're laying on a very hard surface and carrying lots of extra pounds. Whereas we normally can't feel baby body parts, when I'm on the board we can feel and see many things and his little round head is always right under my ribs. We've tried moving a flashlight down my belly and it's amazing to see how he truly responds to the light and seems to like it. If only he would follow the light......

Maybe we'll try classical music today...

Handstand-under-water pics to follow soon........(Just KIDDING!)

The only thing we may get out of this crazy exercise is the need to buy a new ironing board...

Operation Christmas Child Reminder

MoneySavingMom had a great post today about how one woman is using many of the free products she gets through couponing to fill shoeboxes at Christmas time. I do the same thing and hope you will keep this ministry in mind during this time of year when crayons, school supplies, and flip-flops are on sale so you can stock up and be prepared when November rolls around. If you aren't familiar with Operation Christmas Child it is a ministry run by Billy Graham's son, Franklin, that takes shoeboxes to kids all over the world who don't get Christmas gifts. I think they did over 7 million last year! Many churches do shoebox drives to encourage each family in their congregation to fill a box. For more info on how to participate, go here.

If you regularly participate, be scouting for things to put in your boxes NOW. I have found brand-new-in-the-package matchbox cars at yard sales for a quarter which are ideal gifts for these boxes. Not only will it save you money to buy most of it in advance but it will save you the stress of shopping during the busy holiday season. If you have young children, this is a really fun service project for them to be involved with as they help you shop for things and pack up the boxes for kids their own ages who have nothing.
