Diaper Making Class!

On Saturday I taught a couple of ladies how to make cloth diapers. It was a fun time and it was made much easier by the fact that my visiting mother-in-law watched the kids a bunch while we sewed. One of the ladies is due with her third baby in a month and her goal is to get 20 done before the baby comes! I ended up making 4 diapers that day and coaching each of them through a diaper. Teaching can be so hard! It's one thing to do it yourself and learn tricks the hard way, but teaching others is humbling as I made many foibles and I'm sure was quite confusing in my directions at times. If anyone else is interested in learning how to make these wonderful diapers, let me know and I can try to get you my tips and directions on how to do it. Shannon, at http://www.greenacredesigns.com/ sells the waterproof fabric at a great price! I usually look for old receiving blankets and fleece pieces at the thrift store, but since they didn't have any this time I had to buy some fleece and flannel, making the diapers approximately $2 a piece. However, that's still a lot cheaper than buying cloth diapers or using disposables since I figure having 8-12 in each size is sufficient for the amount of laundry I do. These diapers will last through multiple children too!

Do you mean cotton fleece? Polyester fleece (i.e. polar fleece) isn't absorbant...I use it on the outside of my diapers. I use microfleece on the inside because the microfleece doesn't absorb, but it wicks the moisture away. :)

Hello! I saw your comment on Crystal's site and I would love to hear more about your diaper making adventures. We're expecting our first in July! You can't beat the price of these homemade cloth diapers! I'm going to get some newborn disposables too, as I don't want to put too much on myself during those first weeks, but I'd like to have some ready in case I feel up to it. I went to the Green acres site you mentioned, but specifically what fabric do you purchase (for both the inner and outer layer)and how much of it. Also, what pattern do you use from the fern and faerie site. I should try some different ones, but if they've worked so great for you, I figure why not just go with that! I'm not great at sewing, but I think with my mom's help I can get going on this. As your time allows, could you please email me at jehoch@gmail.com? Thank you so much!! Jessica

I also wanted some info. Right now I just use the Gerber birdseye cloth with the snappi hooks and the old plastic pants. But I would love to make some like these. I have been wanting to for awhile just am now getting around to it. Could you email me amounts of fabric, which diaper pattern you use, and any other pertinent info too?? I am a somewhat beginner seamstress and am just not sure how much of which fabrics I need! stacey.mcclure@gmail.com

Wow, I guess I am posting a comment way after this was posted and way after everyone else LOL sorry but I would love to know how to make these for my older girls (ages 6&7) who are still needing pullups at night. I would love to cut that expense! I am way confused and not a very good seamstress but just got a new sewing machine and feel up to the challenge for such an inspiring feat! :) Could you please email me links/instructions at sheila.r.walling@gmail.com? Thank you so much for sharing! :) I am going to make some of the little leather shoes (or should I say attempt?) as well. ;) I understood from your post where to buy that pattern. But any tips/insight would certainly be welcome ! :) Thanks again and God bless you all! :)
