Blogger Promises

Even though it bugs me when bloggers promise they will post pics of something and don't...I have found myself doing that exact thing this weekend! So, rest assured that I haven't forgotten and do plan to post pics tomorrow of our two bedrooms, our kitchen, and I'll even throw in some pics of our Jesse Tree too! Between some busy weekend activities, finishing up the cleaning on the old apartment, and having a very demanding little girl who no longer naps and can't handle more than an hour of "rest/quiet" time, I haven't had opportunity!

So, check back tomorrow!

P.S. In the meantime, I'm having some milk supply issues and am looking for tips anyone might have on boosting breastmilk. And, along those lines, several of my friends have suggested a beer a day really helps. So, one night recently, out to supper with just my mom and Justus, there I was drinking a beer out of the bottle and of course we got seated right next to the door and 50% of everyone coming in and out knew us and the rest were probably wondering why a young mom with a tiny baby was drinking beer, and along came one of my church elders to chat with us, along with his wife who is the sweetest gal at church........(you get the idea!) I think that was the first beer I ever bought and boy did it feel weird, even if believe drinking in moderation is not wrong! The beer didn't seem to help which kinda relieved me since I didn't really like the taste!

I would guess your supply issue has to do with your extreme busyness ~ of course, there are herbs that can help - but my gut says you need to take a day off and drink plenty of liquids.

Hey, Lindsey,
Is the problem with your supply? My mom in law is a lactation consultant and she tells me that supply can dwindle with busyness, stress and also if the mom is trying to lose weight before it was time for your body to drop the weight.8-10 glasses of water and at least 3 glasses of milk are also a good idea.I know moving makes the busyness worse but you need to make deliberate effort to slow down. She also does not suggest the beer.If anything she suggests extra healthy calories.I will pray for you!

My 2 cents- beer is a bad idea.

I am with the other commenters: good calories, water, rest and a little body fat :)

I just wanted to say, I didn't mean to come across as harsh about the beer thing. I am a teetotaler, but not because I think it is a sin. Just for a lot of other reasons. It just freaks me out a little with the breastfeeding thing because alcohol DOES get into the breastmilk...

I had a lot more trouble with milk supply with my 2nd and 3rd kids...and I think it was definitely related to not having enough time to properly care for myself.

I once heard the brewers yeast, (what is in the beer that is suppose to help) is good to take. You can usually get it in the bulk section of the grocery store, or natural food store. Just mix a couple tablespoons with O.J. and you should get the same effect as drinking a beer.

What comes to my mind is that our milk supply is stimulated by our baby's sucking (though it sounds like it's affected by stress, as well, as others say). So if Justus sucks more, he'll "call" more to come! I'd offer the breast as a pacifier, if possible. I know that with two other littles, that can be a challenge. Good luck!

www.kellymom.com is a great resource! Be sure to check it out when you get the chance. Here is a great link:

I know that I have been told that eating oatmeal helps, along with eating well and getting enough rest.

I don't consider myself an expert, but I have been able to exclusively breastfeed all of my babies - DD#1 for 22 mos., DD#2 for 14 mos, and DS#3 is still having some everyday and he is 29 mos. old now.

Feel free to email me if you desire.

Blessings!

La Leche League recommends fenugreek and blessed thistle supplements for increasing milk supply. Check out LLLI.org for amounts.

A lot of good advice from other moms - especially rest and allowing Justus to nurse as often as he wants and in place of pacifier usage which can decrease milk supply. A great book is "Breastfeeding and Natural Child Spacing" by Sheila Kippley. She advocates "ecological breastfeeding" which has great benefits for mom and baby.

I used fenugreek and was amazed at the amount of milk increase I had. I took 2 pills 3x a day. I only took it for about a week or two and that seemed to keep my supply up. Hope that works!

I had this problem with Bia, as you know. Several things helped:

~Mother's Milk Tea from the health food store
~Brewer's yeast--there's a recipe for Oatmeal Chocolate Chip lactation cookies on recipezaar that tastes great. But you get more benefit from it if it's uncooked, so try mixing a spoonful of peanut butter with enough brewer's yeast to make a ball-shaped cookie. You can put a chocolate chip on top for fun, too. I used to make these "brewer's yeast cookies" for the girls, and they loved them. The best thing about them: they're super healthy, and the peanut butter masks the strong taste of brewer's yeast. This is an alternative to drinking beer, since it's the brewer's yeast in beer that is supposed to stimulate milk production. (Note: I noticed half a beer was much more effective for me than any brewer's yeast creations, though!)
~Of course, rest and hydration were big, too. I hope you're able to get more rest now--how's that going?

Keep us posted. Hope you are doing better.
