Breaking it Down for Moms #1

I've been reviewing my library book, Eat This, Not That, an excellent resource on swapping healthier alternatives for foods that are terribly unhealthy. If these posts have interested you, please get the book! It is WELL worth the cost! The only thing on the first list that I would have trouble not buying is the Ritz. It's pretty much a staple around here - with cheese. What is the reason for that one, if I may ask? We've actually been buying the Whole Wheat Ritz now. Are they any better, do you know?

Interesting that even some of the "good" choices have bad stuff in them, like MSG and genetically-modified ingredients.

Always good to read the ingredients and remember that if it's not organic and has wheat, dairy, soy, corn and possibly other things, they are 99% most likely genetically modified. Unfortunately the US does not require labeling things genetically-modified so the only guaranteed non-genetically modified food is certified organic. Also good to question eating anything you can't pronounce.

Whole wheat ritz are probably a lot better Kristin, and as long as you are eating in moderation (which I suspect you are since you are in great shape) that's great!

The reason they give for Ritz being bad is:
"The most famous name in crackers is also an easy way to get fat. Each cracker contains 2 grams of refined carbs and nearly 1 gram of fat."

For example:
A box of Carr's Table Water crackers (also round like Ritz) contains 1/4 of the fat and 1,220 calories less than a box of Ritz. A serving of Ritz (10 crackers) has 30 more calories than 15 TLC crackers, plus double the amount of salt, and 3x the amount of fat.
