Sewing for little boys is hard. I'm always making these lovely little skirts and hair bow-type things and I feel bad because the boys don't get as many handmade things from me. So, when I saw this adorable fabric on clearance, I snagged it for my boys. Now what do I make with it? All I can think of is a pillowcase (when they are older and start using pillows) or a tote bag (and my hubby firmly ruled out this idea even though I think it would save me a lot of frustration with Jer carrying fistfuls of cars everywhere and dropping them and crying; He thinks it's majorly non-manly and Jer already has a big enough "feminine side" thanks to having a big sis.)
Please give me some ideas!
This would be for a little later, but look at Skip to My Lou's crayon and drawing pad case - http://www.skiptomylou.org/2007/02/18/mini-swap/. This one is a round up of sewing ideas for boys on Sew, Mama, Sew! http://sewmamasew.com/blog2/?p=201. Of course, I think most everything I just listed would be for when he is older. :)
ReplyDeleteI think you might be on the right track with a small tote bag. My son who is four same has a mesh one I think I got for a dollar from Old Navy a couple of years ago. He calls it his backpack, its a complete lifesaver. He fills it before we go with four or five cars and his blankey and then plays with it in the car. Its kinda girly but if you have the right fabric I would consider it more of a back pack than a purse:)
ReplyDeleteHow about bean bags? Then you could make a board with holes for a little game.
ReplyDeleteYou could also make a cape or something out of it for playing in... If he likes to play dress up with his sister... a pair of shorts for summer... pajamas...
ReplyDeletebean bags are a great idea! (you could just use a pan or a bucket to toss them into, too)
ReplyDeletejammie pants or boxers
a cleaning apron (with pockets for carrying toys that need to go to another room)
slippers (you can use the rubber-type shelf liner stuff for the bottoms)
like Rachel said, a backpack styled tote bag. Just make your basic bag shape, but sew in loops at the bottom sides for the straps to run through. Then run 2 sets of long ties through a casing at the top of the bag (creating a drawstring closure) & through your loops ~ viola - a backpack.
stuffed bear or other animal
Bible cover
you're right ~ girls are definitely easier to whip something up for!! have you seen the tutorial for the no sew tutus?? darling!
I've made overalls for little boys. That material would look nice with a solid shirt underneath.
ReplyDeleteno crafty advice here! My MOM made the boys pillow cases and sheets out of fun material...
ReplyDeleteIf you have enough, I think they would be super adorable pajama pants.
ReplyDeleteHi there! I couldn't think of any other ideas right now (but it looks like you have a bunch of great ones). I just wanted to stop by and say hello! Thanks for the recent note on my blog! I saw that you asked Lesley about homeschool curiculum and I wanted to ask you the same thing. :o) Any thoughts on curiculum? (Are you still planing to homeschool? If so, when are you going to start?) I've been going to a home-school mom's group once a month for the past few months and it's been really interesting to ask them questions and learn more. I'm pretty sure that's what we're going to do. The cool thing is that Steve seems pretty excited about it too! A couple years ago I never would have guessed that would happen! I appreciate the help you have already been to me in gathering info on the subject!
ReplyDeleteHope you have a great day!
love,
Natalie
I can't wait to get my sewing machine. But then I will have to chose between fabric and yarn! Oh no!
ReplyDeleteI was going to suggest a back pack. As for the tote bag, I wish I could get you a picture of the little bag my son has. It's rectangular, the long way, has a zipper on top (you could maybe just make a flap). It has one strap. It's in camo fabric b/c it's an ammo bag! My dh found it on sale in the hunting area and bought it for him to carry his stuff around. He slings it over his shoulder so the strap runs across his chest. Does that make sense? Anyways, what is more masculine than an ammo bag? And believe me, my dh is very sensative to the whole gender role thing. He laughed to see our son hit a barbie doll with a barbie leg that had fallen off another barbie...
I have a very fun pattern for PJ pants and tops for boys/men that I plan on using for my boys (if I have any) That kind of sewing guys like.
ReplyDeleteAlso if your hubby isnt into the tote bag thing, how about a messenger bag? It is a bit more manly and very popular now so I'm sure there are patterns somewhere!
It is cute material!!!
